Lens Filters?

Anyone knowledgeable enough to give me some lens filter basics? From what I've read/heard I take it I probably should have at least a UV filter and/or a Polarizer (circular means what?). Been doing a bit of looking online and I'm a bit overwhelmed at the variety of types and prices especially. How important is a coating vs. uncoated? Do you stack different filters up in different lighting/scenarios? I know my outdoor pictures suffer because I can see the washed out look in them....

Starter DSLR

Hey you photography knowledgeable people! I'm wanting to get a nice entry level DSLR. I don't want to be a pro I just want a camera to take some great pics with. Right now I'm looking at getting a used Nikon D40. I really don't want to spend more than $400, and preferably less. Any suggestions? What should I look for? The biggest con to the D40 that I have found is that it doesn't have built in Auto Focus (lens dependent).

My primary camera right now is the 5MP...

New Lens

Holy shit, new zoom camera lens. This is the first time I've taken 'er out for a test run, and I'm way impressed. These images are hardly retouched, just cleaned up a wee bit, the detail and colour is quite good. On the downside, it picks up a lot of noise, and can't handle much movement, which is tough considering the camera+zoom lens probably weighs ten pounds...

I'm aware of how much these photos suck, but it was +40 outside, and quite frankly, the area is dangerous and I was alone, so I rushed it.

Alas, this is "downtown" Lethbridge, one of the most depressing places on earth. There is no excuse for the squalor, as the rest of the city is quite affluent. Do we blame Wal-Mart and other corporate fatties for pushing the local business owners out, or do you blame the people for abandoning their hometown pride for bargain prices?...

Camcorder question

My brother is having a baby soon so I decided to get him a camcorder as a gift. I wanted to pick the right thing but unfortunately there are so many different types out there from DVD, to Mini DV, to memory stick, to hard drive etc etc that I felt a bit overwhelmed.

I settled on a Sony HDR-SR5 for a few reasons. 1080i recording was important... since 30 years from now he's gonna want to look back at the best resolution available. I know there are 1080p camcorders surfacing but...

House Renovations

My parents house is currently under major renovations. It was built during WW2, so the bones of the house after the tear down are rather spooky, to say the least. I'm alone here at night, and the wind whistling through the wall slats at night is pretty darn creepy...

So, twas my birthday on Weds, and my mother bought me the craziest gift I have ever gotten, a Pentax K10, which is a super high end sophisticated camera. Even says right in the manual that this if for the advanced user, and they ain't kiddin'. It's no point and shoot, everything must be set manually if you want to get any effect beyond the normal settings, and even then, if the lighting is off or whatever, that must be changed using the shutter speed/aperture dials, as opposed to clicking a...
